    —Generator Interlock

What Is a Generator Interlock Kit

A generator interlock kit is a mechanical device installed on your electrical panel's cover that makes it physically impossible for your main breaker and your generator breaker to be switched on at the same time. This prevents your generator from feeding power back into the utility lines, which can seriously injure or kill utility workers repairing the grid and can damage your generator and home wiring.

Want to learn more about interlock kits? Call us anytime at (425) 371-8570 for a free consultation.

    —Plug-In

How the Generator Plug-In Connection Works

A generator plug-in connection starts with a weatherproof power inlet box mounted on the outside of your home, wired to a dedicated double-pole breaker in your panel. When the power goes out, you place the generator outside, plug it into the inlet with a heavy-duty cord, switch off your main breaker, slide the interlock into position, and turn on the generator breaker. You then switch on the circuits you want powered, one at a time, as your generator's capacity allows.

Because the whole panel is available, you manage the load manually, deciding which circuits to run and keeping the total within your generator's output. It is a simple, effective system when used with care.

Panels and breakers also age, and some older models are more prone to nuisance tripping or, conversely, to failing to trip when they should — both of which we can evaluate during a visit.

Ready to get a safe generator plug-in connection? Call us anytime at (425) 371-8570

    —Switch

    Interlock Kit vs. Transfer Switch

An interlock kit gives you access to every circuit in your panel and costs less than most transfer switch systems, but it relies on you to manage the load by hand. A transfer switch or generator sub panel powers a pre-selected group of circuits and is simpler to operate, which many homeowners prefer, especially if others in the household will use it.

We explain both options honestly, help you weigh cost against convenience, and recommend the approach that fits your generator, your household, and your budget.

Not sure whether an interlock or transfer switch is right for you? Call us anytime at (425) 371-8570 .

    —Panel

    Panel Compatibility

An interlock kit must be made for your exact panel brand and model, and not every panel qualifies. Panels from major manufacturers often have listed interlock kits available, while some older panels and panels with known safety issues do not, and a panel without room for the generator breaker may need modification. We verify compatibility before we begin and tell you plainly if a panel upgrade is the safer path.

Wondering if your panel can accept an interlock kit? Call us anytime at (425) 371-8570.

    —Inlet

    Sizing Your Generator Inlet

Generator inlets are commonly available in 30-amp and 50-amp ratings. At 240 volts, a 30-amp inlet supports up to roughly 7,200 watts and a 50-amp inlet up to roughly 12,000 watts, subject to your generator's actual output and the cord used. The inlet, wiring, and breaker must all be sized to match, and we help you choose the right size for your generator and the loads you want to run.

Want help choosing the right inlet? Call us anytime at (425) 371-8570

    —Safety

    Generator Safety

Never connect a generator to your home with a cord plugged into a dryer outlet or any other improvised connection, and never run a generator in a garage, basement, or near windows, doors, or vents, because carbon monoxide can build up quickly and is deadly. Use working carbon monoxide alarms in your home.

We also verify your generator's neutral and grounding configuration is compatible with the connection method we install, because incorrect bonding can create shock hazards or keep protective devices from working properly.

Have safety questions about using your generator? Call us anytime at (425) 371-8570

    —Permits and Inspections

    Generator Interlock Permits and Inspections

Interlock kit and inlet installation requires an electrical permit and inspection in jurisdictions throughout Snohomish and King Counties. An unpermitted generator connection can create serious safety risks and may affect your homeowner's insurance coverage. We handle all permitting and inspection requirements and provide documentation of your approved, code-compliant installation.

Questions about permits for your generator connection? Call us anytime at (425) 371-8570.

Honest and Upfront We were dealing with a shorted circuit in our house for going on a month and every other electrician that came out for a quote to fix the issue would cost me 250+ ending with an astronomical quote. This was not only frustrating but costing me a fortune and making the problem less traceable the more each company had their hands on it. I called REddie Electric and, after a few general questions on the issue and house, Eddie was able to give me a solid quote on replacing the outdated and rusted panel box along with the circuit to restore the power to the spare room in our house. We were scheduled within a week and the process spanned over 2 days with power only being out for a total of 7 hours on day 2. They replaced our outdated 125 amp panel box with a new 200 amp panel box and quickly discovered a solution to the circuit problem that had been bugging us for weeks. The electricians Vadim and Yasir were super respectful of our home and always kept us in the loop with what’s going on. Communication was never a problem and was always super fast and friendly.

The electrician, Vadim, who worked at my place was friendly and professional. My 5 smoke detectors were replaced with the newest model and everything was cleaned up afterward. I also had a surge protector installed in my circuit panel box.

Vadim and Yasir came out to replace and rewire a faulty GFCI receptacle and they were super quick and efficient in getting it completed. I had a couple of questions regarding quotes and different available options, and they were knowledgeable and kind in answering all of them. Will use their services again!

Excellent support from REddie! Had a mysterious electrical issue with 5 receptacles in a 48 year old home that has had multiple projects. Timely response, extensive troubleshooting resources spent identifying a rather obscure location for a loose neutral. Vadim & Yasir were friendly, professional and highly effective. Identified and Updated some code issues in the process.

Eddie was an absolute pleasure to work with. Due to a scheduling mix-up, I found myself in a real bind, with other workers scheduled for the following day who couldn’t do their jobs until I had electricity run above my fireplace. Eddie went out of his way to rearrange his schedule and somehow managed to get someone to my house within just a couple of hours. The electrician he sent—I wish I could remember his name—did an excellent job. He asked lots of questions to make sure everything was done exactly the way I wanted it, carefully measured and double-checked the placement before drilling, and the finished work looks beautiful. He also cleaned everything up thoroughly before he left. I really appreciated Eddie going above and beyond to help me out on very short notice. Great service, excellent workmanship, and a company I would definitely use again.

I found REddie Electric on a Google search looking to update all 9 of the hardwired smoke detectors in my home. Communication has been exceptional, I have been able to text with questions and requests, and received prompt responses, this quality of communication is really important in my world! I received a quote quickly for installation of 9 hardwired “smart” detectors, and was required to pay a 30% deposit to schedule. Yasir arrived on time, was professional, and did an excellent job with installation, testing and clean up. Wonderful attention to detail and was kind enough to greet all my cats and allow them to “help out”. He connected all detectors to my WiFi and Ring app. I really appreciate the ability to be notified of alarms when I am away from my home, and to be able to turn them off without having to push the physical button. I highly recommend REddie Electric, and will use them in the future for other services they offer.

I'm new to the Area and Found REddie Electric LLC on Google. Submitted them a request to install a 240v outlet in the garage in order to have an EV car charger. They responded back super quick and gave me a solid fair quote for the work. I gave them a call and Eddie told me he'd be out the next morning. Super transparent communication. Pricing is great, and the work was done in a very timely manner. Eddie has a great work ethic and professional outlook on the jobs he takes. I'll definitely be back for more jobs.

Generator plug-in and interlock kit installation involves setting up a safe connection between a portable generator and a home's electrical panel. A generator inlet provides the connection point, while an approved interlock kit helps prevent the generator breaker and utility main breaker from being switched on simultaneously.
Generator interlock installation involves electrical panel work and must comply with applicable codes and equipment instructions. Because incorrect installation can create serious hazards, it is best to have a qualified electrician evaluate and complete the work. Do not modify breakers or interlock components to force compatibility.
Yes. Generator inlets are commonly installed outdoors in a suitable location near the electrical service equipment. The inlet must be rated for the environment, installed with suitable wiring and weather protection, and positioned to support a safe generator connection.
No. Interlock kits are designed for specific electrical panel makes and models. The electrician must verify compatibility, proper fit, required breaker positions, and compliance with applicable electrical codes before installation.
If you want a portable generator to power household circuits through your main electrical panel, a generator inlet and an approved transfer arrangement are typically needed. An interlock kit may be suitable when the panel supports an approved compatible kit. The correct setup depends on your electrical panel and generator.
The appropriate generator size depends on which appliances and circuits you want to operate during an outage. An electrician can help evaluate starting and running wattage, the generator's voltage and amperage, and the home's expected electrical demand.
